Extended Family Unknown, though we learn in Philosopher’s Stone that many of his
ancestors share the same unruly hair. In Order of the Phoenix we are also told
that Pureblooded families are largely interrelated.
Appearance: "James’s eyes were hazel, his nose was slightly longer than Harry’s,
and there was no scar on his forehead, but they had the same thin face, same
mouth, same eyebrows. James’s hair stuck up at the back exactly as Harry’s did,
his hands could have been Harry’s, and Harry could tell that when James stood

but he was a very gifted student, fondly remembered by Professor McGonagall as
one of the most talented along with his best friend Sirius Black. JKR has hinted
that James did not go into a well paying profession as he had enough money to
support himself.
Least Favorite Thing To Do: Act civilly to Slytherins.
Habits: Ruffling his hair to make it look windswept. Showing off.

Special Skills: Became an Animagus at during his Fifth Year. (Took the form of a
Stag, hence his nickname).
An Animagus form is a representation of a person’s character, and a stag is seen
to be a very noble and wise creature.
Special Possessions: One of the
co-authors of the Marauder’s Map. Invisibility Cloak that he inherited from his
father; A family heirloom.
Living Arrangement: James lived with his wife and son in Godric’s Hollow until
the day of his death. It would appear that he came from a wealthy background
before that (inheritance, Invisibilty Cloak). The house is presented in the
movies as a two story cottage.
Facts About James Potter:
James was an extremely confident and talented Wizard,
fondly remembered by Hagrid, Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall and his friends.
During his years as a student he formed a ‘clique’ with his three closest
friends: Sirius Black (described as a ‘brother’) Remus Lupin and Peter
Pettigrew.
Through what we’ve seen of James during his younger years, he was big-headed and
a bully. Remus and Sirius defend him in later years, saying that he and Snape
had always hated each other and that James was deeply opposed to the Dark Arts,
adding that he grew out of it. In his Sixth Year he saved Snape from a
potentially fatal prank, possibly marking the beginning of his ‘growing up’. He
became Head Boy in his Seventh Year, though he wasn’t a Prefect in his Fifth,
this implies that despite his mischievous nature, he was a trustworthy and good
person.
He was very popular at school, and everyone seemed to look up to him, as well as
Sirius. He had the affections of almost everyone with the exceptions of the
Slytherins and Lily Evans. It would appear that he had a bit of a crush on her
from early years, but had no idea how to talk to her. He tried to impress her
with his skills and talents, but she just thought of him as a ‘bullying toerag’.
He matured over time and Lily finally warmed to him in their Seventh Year, when
they began dating.
When he found out that Remus was a werewolf, he was supportive, spending 2-3
years studying to become an Animagus (and helping Peter study) to make his
transformations easier. It appeared that he abused this later on, taking
dangerous risks and not thinking of the consequences.
His friendship with Sirius was very close, similar to Ron’s and Harry’s in some
ways. James gave Sirius a family and stability, he had the upperhand of that
relationship, but he would never abuse it, though Sirius would have done
anything for him. Sirius was James’s intellectual equal, and someone who shared
his interests.
James was a very brave person, he sacrificed himself to give his wife and child
the time to escape, facing Voldemort alone, Voldemort was apparently impressed
by this.
"Very good," said Voldemort softly, and as he raised his wand the pressure
bearing down upon Harry lifted too. "And now you face me, like a
man...straight-backed and proud, the way your father died..." (GoF, pg 604).
Of all his friends, James trusted Sirius the most and when his family was
threatened, he asked Sirius to be Secret Keeper, he was also very trusting of
Peter Pettigrew (suggesting that he was unsure of Remus’s loyalty during the
war) and when Sirius came up with a plan to switch with Peter to trick
Voldemort, he agreed. This was to be his downfall.
