Facts About Lily Evans:Very little is known about Lily, she still stands as the symbol of purity, of perfection. Harry’s image of her has not yet been shattered, so she’s still up on a pedestal, not quite as real or flawed as her husband.
The most important thing about Lily’s life is that she gave it up for Harry. To save him, in her final moments she was selfless, pleading only for her son’s life, not caring about her own. She was an extremely brave woman.
Through what we saw of her in OotP, she was a brave young woman too, standing up to the most popular boy in school in front of everyone. The fact that she did it for Snape, a boy who hated her, talked down to her and would later join a movement that plotted to kill people like her, speaks of an incredibly kind and morally respectable. James and Sirius seem to be worried when she threatens them, this says a lot for her magical ability.
In fanfiction, Lily is often written as a killjoy, or a self absorbed person who is nasty to James all the time. She is neither, she has moral values that James and his friends do not share and she defends them. She seems to think that James should know better, that he’s immature and is disgusted by bullying. She likens his prejudice against Snape and the Slytherins to being similar to the prejudice against Muggleborns and Half-Bloods; she doesn’t make distinctions, seeing hate as hate and not justifying either in anyway.
She is also forgiving, and willing to give second chances, after all, she married James Potter. The man who she said was below the Giant Squid on her list of dating prospects.
Though she will not be insulted, or be made to feel unworthy. When Snape calls her a ‘Mudblood’ she responds in kind: hurt, but not defeated.
There is much speculation about Lily’s eyes, JK Rowling has hinted that the fact that Harry has his mother’s eyes is very important in later books. They are certainly one of her most distinguishing features.
It is also supposed that she has a great talent for Charms and that this will be important in the future.
Perhaps one of the most telling lines about Lily, is not from the books, but the movies.
”The very first time I saw you Harry, I knew you immediately. Not by your scar, by your eyes. They're your mother Lily's. Yes, oh yes, I knew her. Your mother was not only a very talented witch but also an uncommonly kind woman. She saw the beauty in others even and especially if they could not see it in themselves.” (Prisoner of Azkaban, Warner Bros, 2004)
Many people have said that this proves that Lily and Remus were in love, or that at least Remus had a thing for her. Nothing is certain, however. If anything it indicates that they had a very close friendship, and that she knew that he was a werewolf and did not judge him because of that.
Lily Evans is a bit of an enigma, thus far. We’ve only seen glimpses of her through other character’s perceptions. She was well-liked, talented, bright and brave, she had attitude and didn’t back down from her beliefs. There is a revelation about her character coming up in the next book, so we’ll all just have to hang tight and hope for insight.
Words to describe Lily: Outspoken, brave, caring, fair, pretty, powerful, intelligent, vivacious, tenacious, free spirit
