Parentage:

Name: Luna Lovegood
   - nickname: Loony Luna Lovegood
    - name meaning: Luna- Latin for Moon

Age: 15 in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (she’s a younger  than Harry
so it is assumed her birthday was sometime in the year 1981)
    - birth date: c. 1981
   -date of death: still living

Wand: unknown, but she typically has it behind her ear for safekeeping.

Boyfriend/Significant other: None, but she does seem to be a little sweet on one Ronald Weasley (she’s been known to hum “Weasley is our King’ to herself.)

Parents: Her father is the editor of the Quibber. The Quibber is kind of a wizarding tabloid. They have been known to publish less than reputable stories, though they did make a splash when they published Rita Skeeter’s article about Harry Potter’s witness of the rebirth of Lord Voldemort.

Her mother has passed away when she was 9 years old. We don’t know exactly how Luna’s mother died. We know she had a love for experiments. She may have been an Unspeakable. (wudnulike2no adds that in OOTP, Luna states that her mother liked to experiment and that one of her spells went awry when she was 9.  We can assume that this was the cause of her death and that it may have been rather...ugly)

Living Arrangement: She travels around with her father during the summer. Her family may be the Lovegoods mentioned living near Ottery Street

Appearance:

Luna has waist length straggly dirty blond hair and very faint eyebrows that offset her protuberant eyes. She has a dreamy look that often looks like she has turned up where she is by complete accident.

Hair Color: Dirty Blond

Hair Length: Long

Eye Color: Unknown

Height: Unknown

Body Type: Thin (presumed)

Distinguishing Characteristics: Her dreamy expression, and her habit of wearing her wand behind her ear.

Skills/Other:

Beliefs:  Luna holds a variety of rather strange beliefs, which seem to have no basis in fact, but her steadfast faith and calm demeanor are in some ways her finest strengths. While she believe in Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, she also believes that she will see her deceased mother again after death, and it is this belief which comforts Harry.

Academic/Career Skills: Luna is a Ravenclaw, so it is presumed she is an intelligent student.

Least Favorite Thing To Do: She doesn’t seem to have any.

Habits: Luna loves to create completely off the wall saying at the most inappropriate moments.

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure...”

"You can laugh, but people used to believe there were no such things as the Blibbering Humdinger or the Crumple-Horned Snorkack!"

"I think I'll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up … it always does in the end…"

House: Ravenclaw

Special Skills: None known

Special Possessions: None known

Facts About Luna Lovegood:

Luna Lovegood is a year younger than Harry, which will make her a fifth year in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Her classmates consider her to be a little odd, which isn’t a reputation she hasn’t earned honestly. She dresses unusually, she proclaims her strange beliefs to anyone who will listen (and even some who won’t), and in some ways she seems to be completely out of touch with reality. Her behavior is completely bizarre, but she doesn’t seem to notice.
Some of her unusual habits include creating strange roaring hats, hunting Crumple-Honred Snorkacks, and avoiding Nargles.
Because of her odd behavior she finds herself the subject of jokes and pranks.  Most refer to her as Loony Luna Lovegood, and as Ron would say, “a nutter.”

Every year the students in her house hide her things, but she doesn’t seem to mind too much, she knows they’ll eventually turn up. She wears a butterbeer cap necklace and enjoys reading a Quibber upside down.

The first time Harry was introduced to Luna was on the train ride to Hogwarts during his fifth year. We don’t have any indication that he’d even noticed her before this time. He, Ginny, and Neville were forced to share a compartment with her on the train because there were no other seats left. She has a loud laugh, and she enjoys a good joke told by ‘Ronald.' She informed Ron that Padma didn’t appreciate how he ignored her during the Yule Ball, but that she wouldn’t have minded, since she didn’t really like dancing.

Harry quickly discovered Luna was more than meets the eye when he discovered she could see Thestrals. She told him that he was as sane as she was, which wasn't all that comforting to hear.

Luna joined the DA, and even took to defending Harry. She proved to be a true friend, even supporting Gryffindor when they were playing Slytherin during the yearly Quidditch match. She was one of the few DA members who went with Harry to the Ministry of Magic to rescue Sirius from Voldemort.

Luna’s greatest moment as a character was at the end of Order of the Phoenix. When nobody could offer any comforting words to ease Harry’s suffering from the loss of Sirius, Luna lightened his heart. She eased some of his pain by telling him that he’ll see Sirius again someday, and reminding Harry of what he heard behind the veil in the Ministry of Magic’s Department of Mysteries.
