Facts About Regulus Black:

Regulus, Sirius’s younger brother, is only mentioned in a few sentences in Order of the Phoenix.  Sirius gives the only information that we know about him to us, and his version may not be completely accurate.

From what we learn because of Sirius’s conversation with Harry, Regulus was naïve enough (or loyal enough) to believe and run with his family’s “pureblood mania”.  He joined the Death Eaters at a young age, but was murdered when he panicked and tried to back out of an order from Voldemort.  To Sirius’s knowledge, Regulus wasn’t important enough to be murdered by Voldemort himself.

In response to a question regarding whether or not we will be hearing anything from Regulus in the future, JK Rowling has said that “..he’s dead so he’s pretty quiet these days.”

Interesting Facts that may or may not be related to Regulus Black
Regulus’s name creates quite a quandary.  On one hand, his name means Heart of the Lion, which seems like a very brave and Gryffindor meaning.  On the other, Regulus also means basilisk, obviously Slytherin and appropriate of his ancestry.  Perhaps he was born with basilisk traits and died with the heart of a lion—because of a nobler cause than Sirius gave him credit for.

Marcus Atilius Regulus was a Roman general in the first Punic War.  When he went to war with the Carthaginians, he was captured during one of the battles.  The Carthaginians let him out on parole and sent him to Rome to solicit peace, but when he got there he advised the Romans against accepting the Punic terms.  He refused to break his parole, returned to the Carthage, and was tortured to death.  He then became a famous Roman patriot-martyr.

Could the reason behind Regulus Black’s death possibly parallel this historic figure’s death?  It remains to be seen, however, it leaves us something to mull over.
