We know that Severus was not a muggle born, so at least one of his parents had to have been magical. We have also had a few hints that Severus’ father was abusive.

Words That Can Be Used To Describe Your Character: Sadistic, cold, demanding, severe, unfair, prejudiced, unsparing, harsh, stern, forbidding, austere, bitter, firm, inconsiderate, oppressive, relentless, strict

Things That Your Character Often Does: Ridicules Harry; Snape has had a grudge against Harry because of the hatred he felt towards Harry’s father.

Facts about Your Character: Professor Snape has the Dark Mark on his arm, showing that he once was a Death Eater. He became a “secret agent” for the Order of the Phoenix sometime before October 1981, when Lily and James Potter were murdered.
In an interview – I’ve lost the link, sorry – JKR tells us that she thinks the idea of Snape in love is horrible; “Who on earth would want Snape in love with them? That’s a very horrible idea.

Friends: His exact friends are unknown, but we do know that nearly all of them turned out to be Death Eaters: “Snape knew more curses when he arrived at school than half the kids in the seventh year and he was part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters” – Sirius Black.

Living Arrangement:
We don’t know much about Severus’ living arrangement – we don’t know where he stays during the holidays, or what his room at Hogwarts is like. We do know what his office and classroom are like, and this information can maybe be used to help describe and decide what his private room may look like.
In the second book (CoS) where Harry and Ron are taken into Snapes office after crashing the car, JK describes the room as, “shadowy walls… lined with shelves of large glass jars, in which floated all manner of revolting things which Harry didn’t want to know the name of at the moment. The fireplace was dark and empty.” I don’t have my copy of OotP with me at the minute, but I’m sure there is also a similar passage within that book, too.
Snape’s classroom is said to be down in the dungeons, adjacent (opposite) Professor Snape’s office, and in PS when Harry first enters the Potions classroom, this is what we are told: “It was colder here than up in the main castle and would have been quite creepy enough without the pickled animals floating in glass jars all around the walls” from this information we can gather that Snape has a lot of revolting and inhuman substances and animals within jars. He may even have a few in his living quarters. As both his office and classroom are in the dungeons, I would assume that his bedroom would also be down there, and so would probably be quite cold, as we are told the dungeons are.
I would imagine Snape’s living quarters to be dark, shadowy, cold and not the type of living areas most people would enjoy living in.

Describe Your Character:
Professor Snape is the Potions master of Hogwarts and the head of Slytherin house. He is a particularly unpleasant person who hols some amount of authority under Albus Dumbledore. Snape usually teaches whilst bullying and intimidating the students, especially those from the Gryffindor house, and he favors his own students rather openly. He is particularly hateful towards Harry, which is the cause of resentment between Snape and Harry’s father. Another person he is often cruel to is Neville Longbottom whom, as far as we know, he has no particular reason to bully, except from the fact that Neville is obviously scared of him.

Snape attended Hogwarts during the time period of 1971 – 1978, and was a Slytherin in the same year as Gryffindors Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and James Potter. According to Sirius Black, Snape was highly skilled in curses and the dark arts, “Snape’s always been fascinated by the Dark Arts, he was famous for it at school”, "Snape knew more curses when he arrived at school than half the kids in the seventh year and he was part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters".

A few childhood memories Harry saw show us that Snape’s father may have been abusive and he may have had to turn to a study of combat early. Through the pensieve Harry goes in we can guess that Snape’s worst memory may be a humiliating prank when James Potter hung him upside down so his "graying" underwear showed for the world to see, though this is not certain.

Although we are unsure of who started it, it is obvious that Severus Snape and James Potter quickly made a hate/hate relationship, which was backed up by Sirius Black. Neither of the two boys would miss out on an opportunity to curse the other, and we know that James had an awful habit of hexing people for fun – which he didn’t loose until after his fifth (OWL) year.

Sirius Black tells us that Snape spent a lot of time following James and the Marauders around, trying to get them expelled. We are also told that Snape become curious as to where Lupin went once a month, and Sirius tricked him into entering the Whomping Willow to find out. If James Potter hadn’t have realised what was happening and pulled him back Snape would have become a werewolf, or been killed. Snape hated being in dept to James, especially when it was Sirius’ fault, and he was told never to tell anyone by Dumbledore.

Snape was a part of a group of Slytherins who almost all became Death Eaters in the 1970’s. He, too, became a death eater but became a spy for the Order of the Phoenix sometime before October 1981. Snape still has the dark mark.

During Harry’s third year at Hogwarts Snape got the chance to turn Sirius over to the Dementors. He ignored any ideas that Sirius may be innocent and tried to hand Sirius in. It wasn’t until then that the anger and frustration he felt towards Sirius – and his prejudices against werewolves – became evident. Harry, Ron, and Hermione all stunned him in an attempt to listen to what Sirius and Lupin had to say.

Sirius was, however, captured and Snape was offered the Order of Merlin. When Sirius escaped Snape’s frustration at loosing both the Order of Merlin and his anger at Sirius having escaped under his nose became evident. Though, when Fudge refused to believe that Voldemort had returned, Snape even bravely showed the minister his Dark Mark, even whilst knowing it would repel and disgust Fudge.

At the end of GoF when Fudge refused to believe Voldemorts return Snape agreed to do a task for Dumbledore (which was likely to be rejoining the Death Eater circle) and shook hands with Sirius before leaving. This hand shake was simply an acknowledgement of the two being on the same side, rather than a handshake of friendship.

I, personally, believe that Snape rejoining the Death Eater circles was an extremely brave thing to do – considering how he openly told the ministry he was a spy for Dumbledore – and I can’t help but wonder what he had to go through to gain Voldemorts trust, and if he was out under the Cruciatus Curse at all. I’m sure that once Snape had gained Voldemorts trust (or at least some sort of hearing) Snape’s Occlumency skills would have been highly helpful, which in some ways may show that Snape is more skilled in Occlumency than Voldemort in Legilimency which is a very good feat indeed.
